how long to apply second coat of varnish/ oil stain?

Question by Derrick J : How long are second layer of paint / oil stains? I recently applied a coat of varnish / oil stain on a hardwood door. as long as I can after applying a second layer best answer:

most acrylic paints require 6-8 hours for the second layer .. . more if it is damp. Oil paints usually need 24-48 hours. It should be on the can, as long as the application of the second layer.

    Usually 24 to 48 hours. This is especially important if the humidity levels are high. Humidity prevents drying faster.

    It really depends on the product in question. Look on the can for instructions. Some are very picky about when to recoat. I recently used one that said you could recoat in 1 to 4 hours or you had to wait 36 hours for a second coat.
