i was watching a news show the other day and apparently the movie doesnt actually have many scary bits in it, its just that its very suspensful and leaves the audience hanging off their seat. lol so its basically just hype.
Nothing. Every horror movie claims to be the scariest ever made.
I’ve been telling everyone I know who hasn’t seen it, forget the hype and just go in with an open mind. Those previews with the audience reactions are the worst, whoever suggested those should be fired. It’s subtle horror, small things happen that are creepy and definitely make you feel uneasy, and it all works up to a satisfying climax. The movie I would say it most closely resembles would be the original Haunting.
What sets it apart is the simplicity of the movie. Since it’s done documentary-style, with a handheld camera, it’s like you’re seeing some of the parts from the same point of view as the characters. It’s surprising how low the budget was. I think they did a great job setting the mood for the scary parts, since at night they set up the camera in the dark to see and hear whatever is happening. The build-up is great.
I would say the trailer was probably more scary than the movie, but the movie is still really good, and I thought it was scary enough. The movie would probably be more scary if you watch it at home, alone in the dark (after it comes out on DVD), although you might not have the huge screen and great sound of the movie theater.

the first hour of the film is pretty boring and uneventful, but the last half is pretty f*ckin creepy. it’s like a mix of the Excorcist and Blair Witch Project.
i dont understand how people can critique the movie when they haven’t seen it.
now, i went in when it was just a small movie, premiering in less than 10 states, and honestly i didn’t know anything about this movie. i believe this is the reason it was so effective on me.
if you LOVE horror, then u might not be scared of this movie. the effects, the plot, the scares are very simple.
but, because of your horror film experience, i do believe u will appreciate the simplicity and the quality of the film. (for such a LOW budget film, it has excellent production and direction.)
although, being a film student, it is typical for me to appreciate these things, in general.
im hearing it will be released in Oz in early dec of this year (in time for my return to sydney!) i have plenty of soft hearted friends, so i definitely will be taking them in for a cheap scare.
ULTIMATELY, this is an individual movie, a hate it or love it movie. most people are scared but few are actually unshaken. AT LEAST, it’s not one of those overdone, omg theres a murderer’s ghost whos been trapped in this building since the 1600′s, and he’s gonna stalk u in the rain, cut out your power, and haunt your dreams type.
and DEFINITELY dont take the media’s word for ANY movie. because many times have i seen friends opinions change over movies as simple as “ice age” and as complex as “hitchhikers guide to the galaxy”…even though some column in the newspaper suggests it’s ‘qwerky’ or ‘awkward’ or ‘silly’.
The ending makes it scary. And the fact that everything seems so real. You would think that the whole movie is real footage if you didn’t know it is just based off of “true events.”
ive seen it and it is just very suspenseful and will keep you on the edge of your seat. i’ll tell you this much as to its not nearly the scariest of all-time and but it is up there
Its in 1st person view, and it feels real… like this sh!t is really real
I’m a huge horror fan, seeing just about every horror movie that was released since I was born, and the ones before I was born. Paranormal Activity was the scariest movie I’ve ever seen, along with Blair Witch Project, simply because you can’t see what’s haunting you, and you don’t know anything about it… “fearing the unknown.”
I almost shit myself when I saw Paranormal Activity, cried like a little baby, and have been sleeping with the TV and lights on for the past week.
The fact that it’s spiritual, and not human murder, is scary. I mean, come on, you can see people, you know about them. What’s so scary about that?
Paranormal Activity is about two young middle class couple Katie and Micah who is disturbed by the demonic presences in the house that is somehow attached to Katie
Here is the freakiest part of the whole film:
At about 3:35 a.m. she moves to the bedroom door and exits, going down the stairs into the darkness. Suddenly, Katie screams for Micah, who jumps out of bed. As he hits the staircase, the droning noise becomes increasingly lower pitched and demonic. The camera sees nothing but the bedroom and the dark hallway, but the activity downstairs can be heard. Katie continues to scream; some struggling is heard, followed by dead silence. Moments later, heavy footsteps can be heard coming up the stairs. Unexpectedly, Micah’s body is hurled towards the camera. He collides with it and both fall to the ground, where Micah remains motionless. Katie stands in the doorway with blood on her shirt. She crawls, very unnaturally on all fours to Micah’s body and, like an animal, sniffs at him. She sees the camera and smiles at it eerily, her face contorted and evil, suggesting that she has been possessed by whatever has been haunting her. Katie lunges toward the camera with a loud scream, her face demonic, and the screen cuts to black. Following this, we are told that Micah’s body was found soon afterwards, and that Katie’s whereabouts remain unknown
It’s all hype. There are only a few moments in the movie that make it worth seeing. Its mostly waiting around for something to happen. It’s so special because it was like a home movie, just like the Blair Witch Project. It’s worth seeing, but don’t get too excited, its all hype.
